Sergio Fernando Juárez grew up in Santa Barbara, CA. His family originates from Jalisco
and Durango Mexico. He attended Santa Barbara High School and graduated in 1999 but
as a first-generation student from migrant parents he had some trouble navigating
college and it wasn’t until 2010 that he received his bachelor’s degree from CSU Channel
Islands. Afterward, he attended New Mexico State University (NMSU) and received a
master’s in Communication Studies in 2012. Following NMSU Sergio attended the University
of Denver (DU) and received his PhD in Communication Studies.
Before coming to Fresno State, Dr. Juárez was a lecturer for California State University
Channel Islands, Loyola Marymount University, and California State University Northridge.
His scholarship has centered on understanding the social construction of difference
(i.e. race, sexuality, gender, class, ability, and more) through communication critical
paradigm theories of Chicanx, Black, and Queer feminist scholarship. His research
interests are currently centered on education contexts, influencing his goals that
include the development of new institutional structures by leveraging technology to
construct anticolonial inclusive educational practices and structures.
