Giving to English and Creative Writing

Students who study English and Creative Writing at Fresno State explore the power of language and literature around the world. Through the generosity of our supporters — community friends, alumni, faculty, staff, and even the students themselves — the department's student scholarships and projects continue to grow, thrive, and reach new heights.

When making your gift online or by check, please make sure to write in your preference from the list of scholarships and projects listed below. 

  • Andrés Montoya Memorial Scholarship — Supports up to two students each year in any discipline, with significant interest in creative writing about Chicanx culture and history.
  • Cheng Lok Chua Scholarship — Supports up to two students each year in English, with significant interest in multiethnic literatures.
  • Department of English Scholarship — General scholarship supports up to five students each year, from all English Department programs.
  • H. Ray McKnight Memorial Scholarship — Supports one first-generation graduate student each year, with significant interest in literature.
  • John and Corrinne Hales Scholarship — Supports one student each year in creative writing, from the MFA program.
  • Larry Levis Memorial Scholarship — Supports one student each year in creative writing, from the MFA program.
  • Peter Everwine Memorial Scholarship — Supports one undergraduate student each year in creative writing.
  • Philip Levine Scholarship — Supports one student each year in creative writing, from the MFA program.
  • Professor Emeritus Eugene Zumwalt Scholarship — Supports up to five students each year in English.
  • Soul Vang Scholarship — Supports up to three students each year in any discipline, with significant interest in creative writing about the Hmong or Asian American experience.
  • Whitney Alan Fisher Memorial Scholarship — Supports one student each year in creative writing, from the MFA program.

  • Creative Writing Awards — Supports student awards in our annual Creative Writing Prize contests.
  • Mireyda Barraza Martinez Writing Awards — Supports student awards in our annual social justice writing prize contest.
  • English Annual Fund — Supports community engagement.
  • Fresno Poets' Association — Supports visiting authors for our annual reading series.
  • The Normal School — Supports student editors of our locally grown, nationally known literary magazine.
  • Young Writers' Conference — Supports students and teachers from area high schools to attend the annual conference through our Adopt-a-School initiative.
