Karen and PJ Mistry Scholarship
The Karen and PJ Mistry Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding graduate student in Linguistics who has completed two semesters of graduate work. The scholarship is designed to especially encourage advanced work in the form of a publishable paper or thesis in general or applied linguistics. The scholarship is awarded to a student who is initiating a research project/thesis and shows a high degree of promise to complete publishable work within general or applied linguistics. Scholarship applications are reviewed by a committee of faculty in linguistics, who make the final award decision.
The scholarship is named in honor of emeriti professors of linguistics PJ and Karen Mistry. The Mistrys taught at Fresno State for 30 years, from 1969 to 1999. Their research and teaching covered areas such as syntax, historical linguistics, history of linguistics, first and second language acquisition, applied linguistics, and Indic and African languages. Throughout their distinguished careers, these dedicated instructors and mentors made enormous contributions toward the academic growth of hundreds of students at Fresno State. The Karen and PJ Mistry Scholarship is an extension of the Mistrys’ dedication to Fresno State’s linguistics students.
