Certificates in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages/Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (TESOL/SLAT)

Undergraduate Certificate of Special Study in TESOL/SLAT

The certificate of Special Study in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages/Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (TESOL/SLAT) is intended for local and international Bachelors students who wish to specialize in teaching languages (e.g. English, Chinese, Japanese) to foreign/second language learners.
 

Required courses (12 units): 

  • LING 141 - TESOL/SLAT (Second Language Acquisition & Teaching) (3 units)
  • LING 150 - Teacher Presence and Classroom Management (3 units)
  • LING 171I - Internships in Linguistics and TESOL/SLAT (3 units)

Select one course from (3 units): 

  • LING 146 - Practical English Grammar for Language Teachers (3 units)
  • LING 155 - Computer Assisted Language Learning (3 units)

Advising Note: 

  1. Before beginning the certificate, students must complete one introductory Linguistics course: LING 10, LING 11, or LING 100.
  2. We strongly recommend that international students also take LING 110W prior to or concurrently with LING 141.
  3. A grade of C or better is required for all certificate courses.
  4. Open to all students.

Graduate Certificate of Advanced Study in TESOL/SLAT

The Department of Linguistics at the California State University, Fresno, offers a Graduate Certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages/Second Language Acquisition and Teaching (TESOL/SLAT).

This certificate is designed to train post-baccalaureate participants in the theory and practice of TESOL/SLAT, with application to a wide variety of teaching circumstances. Students must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better in the program. 

  • LING 10, Introduction to Language, LING 11: Linguistics for Teachers, or LING 100: General Linguistics (3 units)
  • LING 141: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (3 units)

  • LING 235 - Teaching the Four Language Skills (3 units)
  • LING 244 - Curriculum Design and Classroom Evaluation (3 units)
  • LING 271 - Graduate Practicum in TESOL (3 units)

And choose one course from the following options:

  • LING 241S - Seminar in TESOL/SLAT (3 units)
  • LING 250 - Graduate Seminar in Teacher Performance and Classroom Management (3 units)
  • LING 265 - Seminar in Language Acquisition (3 units)
