University scholarship programs
California Graduate Equity Fellowship Program
These fellowships enable students from historically underrepresented backgrounds to pursue their graduate degrees with financial assistance in amounts up to $2,000 per academic year. Students may receive the award for 2 years, but must reapply each year for the award.
Graduate Student Research and Creative Activities Support Award
The Division of Research and Graduate Studies have partnered with the Provost's office to fund a number of competitive awards recognizing high-quality graduate student scholarship. Awards in amounts up to $2,000 are made in support of the quality scholarship of graduate/doctoral student research and creative activities associated with the thesis/dissertation or project requirement.
California Pre-Doctoral Program for Undergraduate and Graduate Students
This program is designed to increase the pool of potential faculty by supporting the doctoral aspirations of California State University students who have experienced economic and educational disadvantages. Scholars are awarded $5,000 to travel to doctoral institutions and national conferences to enhance their entrance into doctoral study. Summer internships are also available for selected scholars. Application is completely online. Must make appointment with campus coordinator Ronald Dzerigian to begin application. Graduate Student Travel Grant
The Division of Research and Graduate Studies (DRGS) awards travel grants to graduate students who have had papers and/or posters accepted for presentation at major professional conferences or society meetings. Recognition of the student's scholarly work in such refereed forums is a source of pride for the university, and the Dean of Research and Graduate Studies provides these funds to encourage and promote professional advancement of our graduate students.
Funding supports the student who is making a presentation, and it is expected that the student will formally acknowledge this support from the California State University, Fresno Division of Research and Graduate Studies in program announcements or during the presentation. Students are encouraged to include this award in their résumés.
Deadline: Ongoing. For the Division of Research and Graduate Studies grant, all materials must be submitted at least 30 days prior to the conference.
Linguistics Department opportunities
Teaching Assistant
We offer a limited number of teaching assistant positions to qualified graduate students. Usually TAs will take full responsibility of teaching one section of a foreign language classes offered in the department, which includes Chinese, Japanese, Persian, Arabic, Hmong and ESL.
Departmental memorial scholarships
PJ and Karen Mistry Scholarship
The Karen and PJ Mistry Scholarship is awarded to an outstanding graduate student in Linguistics who has completed two semesters of graduate work. The scholarship is designed to especially encourage advanced work in the form of a publishable paper or thesis in general or applied linguistics. The scholarship is awarded to a student who is initiating a research project/thesis and shows a high degree of promise to complete publishable work within general or applied linguistics. Scholarship applications are reviewed by a committee of faculty in linguistics, who make the final award decision.
The scholarship is named in honor of emeriti professors of linguistics PJ and Karen Mistry. The Mistrys taught at Fresno State for 30 years, from 1969 to 1999. Their research and teaching covered areas such as syntax, historical linguistics, history of linguistics, first and second language acquisition, applied linguistics, and Indic and African languages. Throughout their distinguished careers, these dedicated instructors and mentors made enormous contributions toward the academic growth of hundreds of students at Fresno State. The Karen and PJ Mistry Scholarship is an extension of the Mistrys’ dedication to Fresno State’s linguistics students.
