Joan K. Sharma received an MFA from Indiana University, Bloomington and a BFA from
Temple University, Tyler School of Art. She teaches color theory, photography, and
design and has co-directed two study tours to India. During the second tour, students
had the unique opportunity to meet artists in their rural home studios and attend
workshops at the Mithila Art Institute in Madhubani, Bihar State, India. The exhibition,
"Mithila Painting: The Evolution of an Art Form”, a traveling exhibition of EAF- Ethnic
Arts Foundation, was coordinated by Sharma and exhibited in the Pete P. Peters Balcony
Ellipse of the Library in October 2012. She received grants for: "The Other Eye on
Afghanistan - An Exhibition of Photographs by Farzana Wahidy" in collaboration with
CineCulture screening of the film, "Frame By Frame” and two multimedia concerts in
collaboration with CineCulture, "Himalayan Song" and "Nari" with Gingger Shankar.
Sharma also received funding and coordinated several concerts and workshops with prominent
classical Indian musicians, Pt. Debasis Chakroborty and Dr. Lovely Sharma, Pt. Shashanka

Sharma expresses ideas through photography, painting, and installation. She has received
numerous awards for her photographs from the International Photography Awards (IPA)
juried exhibitions in 2016 and 2018, 2019 and 2021. In 2014, she collaborated with
Carol Tikijian on “Draw the Line”, a multimedia installation at Gallery 25 that employed
colored light, sound and text giving form to her concerns related to the effects of
climate change. As a public service, she created a seventy-foot mural with the Village
of Hope, Poverello House in 2005. Work has been exhibited at the Fresno Art Museum,
Spectrum Gallery, Gallery 1825, Gallery 25 and Arte Americas and as part of ARTBOX.PROJECT World 2.0 at the URBANSIDE Gallery, Zurich Switzerland in 2022
