Dr. Young (Hyeyoung) Maeng is an artist-researcher whose practice bridges contemporary painting, philosophy, and artificial intelligence. Her studio work investigates expanded painting by integrating Western and Korean painting traditions with digital photography and video art, reimagining the painterly process through the lens of AI and posthuman thought.
Her PhD research examined the intersections of painting and film, transforming the process of Korean Bunche painting into an experimental video art form known as Documentation Art. This project engaged Gilles Deleuze’s concepts of the time-image, aesthetics of sensation, and the body without organs, situating them within the aesthetics of Tao and Korean true-view realism. Documentation Art has been presented internationally at the Seoul Arts Center, Gallery Dos, Peter Scott Gallery, Liverpool FACT, and the Deleuze & Guattari Conferences in London, Rome, Seoul, and Prague.
Currently, Dr. Maeng’s ongoing research project, AI Humanity, supported by a P-RSCA
Impact Grant, explores the philosophical and ethical dimensions of human–AI companion
relationships through the framework of expanded painting. Her work reinterprets the
philosophical concept of univocity of being in the age of intelligent machines, proposing
new visual and conceptual approaches to coexistence between human and non-human entities.
Before joining California State University, Fresno as Assistant Professor of Art in
Painting & Drawing, Dr. Maeng taught at Kongju National University and Gongju National
University of Education in South Korea, where she offered courses in Asian and Korean
Art History, Western Aesthetics, and Art Educational Theory.
