Dr. Hillary A. Jones teaches core courses in rhetoric, including theory and criticism,
and courses drawing on her particular areas of expertise, including rhetorical approaches
to popular culture, digital media, visual and sequential art, and game studies.
Dr. Jones’s research employs rhetorical criticism and critical theory to illuminate
the social justice possibilities and constraints of new media and of speculative and
science fiction texts (both on the screen on and on the page). Her research has appeared
in Critical Studies in Media Communication, Southern Communication Journal, Rhetoric Society Quarterly, Communication, Culture, and Critique, and edited collections about rhetoric and media. She co-edited the fifth edition
of Readings in Rhetorical Criticism.
With her most current research, Dr. Jones is exploring posthumanisms and feminisms
in science fiction television and video games. Her recent book (co-authored with Heather
Hundley and Roberta Chevrette), Dangerous Dames: Representing Female-Bodied Empowerment in Postfeminist Media, led off Peter Lang's new Cultural Media Studies book series in 2020.
Dr. Jones is a member of ΦΒΚ (Phi Beta Kappa) and ΛΠΗ (Lamdba Pi Eta), and she is active in numerous professional organizations, including the Rhetoric Society of America, Western States Communication Association, and the Organization for Research on Women in Communication.
