Dr. Ellen Lipp teaches various courses for the Department including an introduction
to teaching English as a second language, the TESL practicum, bilingualism and bilingual
education, and the graduate seminar on teaching basic written English. In many of
her classes, she emphasizes practical classroom applications. For example, when teaching
Linguistics 141, her students participate in an interactive journal writing project
involving elementary school children from Fresno Unified. She has given teacher training
workshops in Brazil and in Estonia. During recent semesters she has coordinated the
Linguistics Department's ESL Composition Program. For about nine years she directed
the CSUF American English Institute, where she worked closely with new ESL teachers.
She was Program Chair for the 1997 CATESOL Conference, which took place in Fresno
and which attracted about 3,000 participants. Dr. Lipp's research areas are in reading
and writing processes; TESL methodology; and cultural issues in the community and
the classroom.
