My research focuses on Second Language (L2) Speech Learning and Applied Phonetics. I am interested in examining the factors that contribute to adult L2 learners’ difficulties in distinguishing and producing the target language speech sounds. Some of my past research projects investigated cross-linguistic speech perception and production of English vowels, Mandarin Chinese consonants and tones, and the impact of length of residence on the perceived degree of foreign accent. My research also involves designing, developing, and implementing laboratory-based phonetic training programs for learning L2 speech sounds and prosody. L2 speakers taking such phonetic trainings learn to identify and produce the target speech sounds/tones with immediate feedback. Some of the training programs have been integrated into my courses as extra curriculum CALL (computer-assisted language learning) activities for my students.
