Certificate in Special Study in Music Performance

The Certificate of Special Study in Music Performance is intended for those persons who wish to study an instrument or voice without matriculating for a degree. A candidate for the certificate program should be qualified for advanced standing (Jury II competency) in his or her specialty prior to admission. Admission to the program requires the consent of both the major professor and the chair of the School of Music.

The certificate program will comprise a minimum of 12 units of upper-division work, to be structured on an individual basis with the approval of both the major professor and the chair of the School of Music. The individual program, along with the requisite approvals, will be in writing and kept on file in the school.

The general requirements for the certificate program are:

  • Instruction in the student's major voice or instrument during each semester of residence
  • At least one course in music theory or history
  • At least one ensemble course, appropriate to the student's area of specialization, for each semester of study.
