Dr. Alison Mandaville joined the English faculty at Fresno State in 2013. She specializes
in Writing Studies, Comics and Graphic Novels, Translation, and American literature
in a global context. She has collaborated with "water-interested" colleagues across
the disciplines, including on the "Common Water Reading" Program.
In 2007-2008, Dr. Mandaville served as a Fulbright Scholar in Azerbaijan and in 2010
received a follow-up Fulbright award to offer creative writing workshops to women
in Baku and conduct research on the literary environment in the Caucasus.
A creative writer and translator, she has received writing residencies for her work
in poetry and translation with Hedgebrook, Blue Mountain Center, Playa Summerlake, Willapa Bay, Hypatia-in-the-Woods,
Soaring Gardens and Stoveworks. Her poetry and translations have most recently been published in World Literature Today, Two Lines, Terrain, and Superstition.
She received an Open Society grant and two UNESCO cultural heritage grants to translate
and edit collections of Azerbaijani women’s poetry. Most recently, she collaborated
with colleagues in Environmental Sciences to conduct workshops on creative climate
literacy with K-12 teachers in Azerbaijan.
She received the Classroom Excellence Award from the California Association of Teachers
of English (2016); the Provost's Award for Promising New Faculty (2017), Award for
Outstanding Advisor (2020); and Outstanding Service-Learning Faculty Award (2021).
Before returning to graduate school, Dr. Mandaville taught in the Oakland, California
public school system. She is excited to be back in California working with pre-service
English Teachers in the Central Valley.
