This is my first semester here at Fresno State, and I’m stoked to be here. Some of
my highlights as a journalist have included freelancing for The New York Times, writing
a column for The Virginian-Pilot, editing a local art and activism magazine for a
decade, serving as the executive producer on a documentary series for Black Entertainment
Television, and interning at ESPN.
My work has always walked a line between journalism and activism, and I’ve been lucky
to work on causes I believe in. Back in Virginia, I was on the small team with Virginia
NORML that led the push for the legalization of medical cannabis and its subsequent
decriminalization. I also helped start an arts district, a public art festival, and
helped bring PRIDE to the city for the first time. I have also worked for more transparent
government, greater civic engagement, and more support for local businesses and entrepreneurs.
At my last college I lobbied on behalf of the students, pushing for better local housing
laws and regulations for students and the less affluent. I remain involved with a
land back movement centered in Northern Colorado.
I believe this world is here for us to make what we want of it, and that we should
make it as beautiful as it can be.
