2014 U.S. Gates Cambridge Scholars

Forty of the most academically brilliant and socially committed young people in the US were awarded a Gates Cambridge Scholarship to study at the University of Cambridge, England, in Fall 2014.  Learn more about Media, Communications and Journalism major Stephanie Gabriela Lopez.  Please see attached.

Barking Bulldogs at the Head of the Pack in Collegiate Debate Tournaments in the Pacific District

The Department of Communication's Barking Bulldogs debate team is currently ranked #16 in the nation and #1 in the Pacific District 1.  The Pacific District 1 is comprised of universities in the states of California, Nevada, and Arizona.  Learn more here.  

The College of Arts and Humanities is pleased to announce the appointment of nine new faculty in the following departments:

Art and Design 

Ms. Rusty Robison, M.F.A. in Design and Technology

Rusty joins the Graphic Design faculty where she will be teaching courses in Interactive Multimedia. She exhibited the interactive Sound+Image: Audiovisual Experience at the Rockerfeller Center and won a Silver Addy Award in Poster Campaign Category. In addition to an extensive and impressive list of companies and clients for which she has designed, Rusty was part of the influential and elite group of graphic artists that studied and developed courses in audio-visual systems at the Parsons The New School for Design in New York City.

Mr. Richard Wanjema, M.F.A. in Design Development

Richard also joins the Graphic Design faculty where he too will be teaching courses in Interactive Multimedia.   He has substantial professional practice experience as a graphic designer and interaction designer for the airline, soft drink, newspaper, and real estate markets both here in the U.S. and in Africa. Richard is a member of the American Institute of Graphic Artists and a member of the College Art Association.

Communication 

Ms. Falon Kartch, ABD

Falon’s expertise is in Interpersonal Communication with an emphasis in Family Communication. She has presented several papers for the National Communication Association 2010, 2011, and 2012 conventions and for the other professional organizations such as the Midwest Popular Culture Association Conference and the Chicago Ethnography Conference. Falon has co-authored three publications: Managing interpersonal conflict: Advances through meta-analysis and Research on conflict: Advances through meta-analysis both currently in press with Mahway, NJ: Taylor and Francis. The third publication is titled “The perceptions of verbal and nonverbal flirting cures in cross-sex interactions.” For Human Communication in 2010.

Ms. Leslie Ramos Salazar, ABD

Leslie is also an expert in Interpersonal Communication with an emphasis in Interpersonal and Quantitative Methods. Other areas of interest and expertise include Conflict, Negotiation, and Facilitation; Computer Mediated Communication; Research Methods, and Intercultural Communications.   She has presented several papers for the Interpersonal Communication Division of the Western States Communication Association 2011, 2012, and 2013 conventions. Leslie is a co-author on a paper accepted for publication to the Communication Quarterly Journal titled “Prevalence and predictors of cyberbullying perpetration and victimization by high school seniors.”

 English 

  Dr. Alison Mandaville, Ph.D.

Alison will assist in providing administrative oversight of the English Education Program. In addition, she brings expertise in the field of English and Literary Studies where her current research centers on graphic literary forms and young adult literature. Alison has presented papers in American Literatures and Comics, World Literatures, and Azerbaijani Studies for various conferences including the Pacific Ancient and Modern Language Association, the National Women’s Studies Association Annual Conference, and the Annual Conference on Comics and Graphic Novels: Convergences: Comics, Culture and Globalization.   She has served as peer-reviewer for the Journal of American Studies, as assistant fiction and poetry editor for the Seattle Review, and is the recipient of several academic grants including a UNESCO grant for collecting, translating, and editing an anthology of poetry by Azerbaijani women. Alison has held two Fulbright Scholars Fellowships and a Visiting Writer Residency in Azerbaijani.   In addition to having been published in a variety of professional journals, Alison’s most recent publication is now in print with McFarland and Company, a book chapter for The Ages of Wonder Woman, titled “A Laboratory of Her Own: Gail Simone’s Wonder Woman and Third Wave U.S. Feminism.”

Linguistics 

Dr. Michael Shepherd, Ph.D.

Michael has expertise in sociolinguistics, discourse analysis, teaching English as a second language, and linguistics and reading. He has presented papers for the 2009 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013 annual meetings of the Linguistic Society of America, the American Association for Applied Linguistics, the New Ways of Analyzing Variation. Michael has recently published “A quantitative discourse analysis of student-initiated checks of understanding during teacher-fronted lessons.” in Linguistics and Education 2012, and has an additional article in preparation titled “On the discursive link between cultural incongruence and minority underachievement.”

Modern and Classical Languages and Literatures 

Dr. Natalie Muñoz, Ph.D.

Natalie has been appointed to the French faculty and will assist with the oversight and development of the French program as well as the single subject credential program in French. She is an expert in French Medieval Literature, particularly the French Fabliaux and has a strong background in Latin, German, and Russian languages and literatures.

Philosophy

Dr. Carolyn Cusik, Ph.D.

An epistemologist, Carolyn’s expertise reflects a contemporary frame that substantively situates human knowledge production and understanding in a social context that arise out of the experiences of those traditionally oppressed, ignored or otherwise othered. In addition, her expertise is situated in fundamental elements of cognitive science and she possesses a competency in the philosophy of law. Moreover, Carolyn’s research addresses deep issues about communication that are directly relevant to the Peace and Conflict Studies program. She has authored three book chapters including “The Problem of Psychology and Public Service Advertising” in Phenomenology 2005 (vol. 5): Selected Essays from North America, published by Zeta Books, 2008. Carolyn has presented numerous papers for the annual Phonomenology Roundtable since 2001.

Theatre Arts 

Ms. Elizabeth Waldman, M.F.A. Theatre: Lighting Design

Elizabeth will be teaching lighting and sound design. Her interests are in the convergence of technology and art in contemporary theatre design and the cultural and historical implications of music and performance. She has designed for numerous professional theatre and dance companies including the Fabrefaction Theatre Company and Zoetic Dance Ensemble in Atlanta, GA., the Southern Repertory theatre, the NOLA Project and the House of Blues in New Orleans, LA. Elizabeth has also worked for professional lighting design firms such as Quickbeam Systems, Inc. and Premier Global Productions.
